DOSHA QUESTIONNAIRE
According to Ayurveda, there are 3 Doshas: Vata (Air + Ether), Pitta (Fire + Water) and Kapha (Earth + Water). Our Dosha is our own unique ratio of these 5 elements of nature that makes our mind-body types and is defined at the moment of our conception. This unique ratio is called PRAKRITI or “natural state”.
Each Dosha has its unique blend of physical, emotional and mental characteristics which can be used to describe us, as well as everything around us such as activities and foods. Knowing our Dosha helps us understand: how we present in life; our likes and dislikes, personality tendencies, strengths and weakness, our type of digestion, as well as the appropriate diet and lifestyle to suit our own unique type.
Commonly, one Dosha is predominant and guides our tendencies in life but we must not forget that we all have all 5 elements present in us so it is perfectly possible that there is a second dominant Dosha or even a similar blend of all 3 Doshas, which we call Tridoshic.
Dis-ease and imbalances happen when our own unique ratio is thrown off balance due to many factors in our environments like weather, seasons, lifestyle choices and diet. These imbalances lead to a secondary “current state” known as Vikruti which is the result of us messing our “natural state” (Prakriti).
We create these imbalances by continually eating foods or adopting habits that are not suited to our own unique constitution— essentially by increasing or decreasing Doshic energies in our body and mind.
A Dosha questionnaire will essentially show your “current state” (Vikruti). Having this information is empowering because it allows you to: determine which Dosha is playing up; your type of digestion; which elements/foods/spices/daily habits/exercise to use to bring you back to balance.
In Ayurveda, the key to balance is to use the opposite qualities or characteristics to the symptoms you are experiencing, to create equilibrium. For example, if you are suffering with anxiety, insomnia, agitation and scattered mind (all Vata imbalances – air + ether) you need to use the opposite quality of the earth element to ground and calm that excessive air and ether. If you are experiencing heaviness, attachment, low mood, obesity (Kapha imbalances – earth + water) you use the lightness of air and ether to bring lightness.
You can learn more about the 3 different Doshas by watching the video and downloading the guide but remember that your Vikruti Dosha does not define you – it’s just a way of recognising our tendencies in life.
Note: Working with an Ayurvedic Practitioner is always the best way to get a comprehensive assessment of your current and your naturAL state. I would be delighted in offering you a 15 minutes complimentary call to discuss your test results.
